Wales Leg Marathons

The Wales leg, which is taking part between the 20th June and 10th July, will be sponsored by Headquarter Company and will see members of the Battalion running marathons all over Wales.  We want veterans, families and everyone connected with the Welsh Guards to join in or organised their own marathons.  The activities are not limited to running – you can cover the 26.2 miles in any way that you want!

There will be a social element to each event; a change for veterans and serving soldiers to mingle over a few drinks.  Details will be regularly updated on the WG100 blog and disseminated on Facebook.

Headquarter (HQ) Company are taking the lead for the Welsh Leg and members of the Company will accompany participants in the organised legs; it will provide a great opportunity to socialise across generations and for the old and bold to swing the lantern!  The variety of activities is designed to encourage maximum participation by the maximum number of people of all ages and abilities.  For kids there will be relay marathons at local schools, for the bionically fit there are marathons in Snowdonia and Brecon to name a few.  For anyone that isn’t up for a full marathon, many events have an option for a half marathon.  Failing that you can organise your own marathon to suit your ability, whether that be a long day’s walk in Snowdonia or canoe trip down the Brecon canal.

Headquarter Company have had an extremely challenging but productive year leading up to our Centenary; in addition to sustaining the Battalion through its deployment to Kenya and taking the lead in the Unit move to Pirbright we are also focussed on our future role which will incorporate a huge vehicle uplift and consequent specialist training.  In amongst this, WG100 represents an amazing opportunity to engage with our history; we may not be visiting Battlefields but we are connecting with the very stuff that our proud Regiment has been made from over the past 100 years.  The Wales Leg celebrates our inheritance and the achievements of those that have gone before.  We very much hope that you will get involved.

Fifteen runners from the Battalion will run a marathon, starting at the Millennium Centre and joining on to the Cardiff St David’s Day 10km race. Either join them in the full marathon or take part in the 10km race. Please get in touch if you would like to take part.

This trail marathon is not for the faint hearted (although it does include a half marathon option!). The Welsh Guards will be putting forward four runners to compete in the elite event; sign up and take part or come along and support.

The Welsh Guards triathlon team will be entering this sprint triathlon as a training exercise for events later in the summer. Feel free to sign up and get involved – it is a sprint distance triathlon so the distances are not huge. This is a great event for beginners.

5. The Dragon’s Back Race, Conway
22-26 June 2015

The Dragon’s Back is one of the hardest multi day marathons in the world, covering a distance of 300 to Llandeilo km in five days. Two elite runners from the Welsh Guards will be taking part and will need your support every step of the way.  The race follows the mountainous spine of Wales; if you live close to the route, come and cheer them on!

Another Brecon marathon, this time with a twist: the marathon starts at 1730 and runners must complete the race by midnight.

A 2.4 mile swim on Friday, followed by a 112 mile cycling sportive and culminating with the Wales Marathon on the Sunday. Sign up to one or all of these events which take place in the beautiful setting of the Pembrokeshire countryside. Join in with the selected few from the Battalion that are taking part.

Details are yet to be published but we will be undertaking a mountain bike marathon in Bala and we urge you to get involved. More to follow on this, look out for updates on the WG100 blog.
